Under Cypress

Under Cypress is a new chapter in the Stone Piano narrative. The series furthers Henry Chu’s previous 2022 work Stone Piano: Under Pine.

In the Stone Piano series, the keyboard is separated from its body in a sculptural design collaboration with Hong Kong-based design duo Batten & Kamp. The separation announces new modular possibilities for artist Henry Chu, liberating sculptural materiality from visual theatre.

Chu describes Under Cypress as a journey both of inspiration and of self-discovery, abandoning boundaries and forming bridges of creativity. In this video odyssey, digital art recreates nature, offering surrogate external landscapes in moving image form. Taking its title from the cypress tree, buoyed and swayed by the winds, the artist imagines unchartered journeys and adventures unfolding beneath evergreen whispers. The immersive forest of sound and colour acts as a storybook embrace and distracting decoy away from the noisy stimulus of Hong Kong city life.
